Shermans Headquarters: Green-Meldrim Mansion Savannah, Georgia On January 12, Union General William T. Sherman and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton met with 20 black leaders of Savannah, mostly Baptist and Methodist ministers, to discuss the question of emancipation. From Sherman's perspective the most important priority was military expediency.
