2022 Kern River Camping The Kern river provides some of the best camping in Southern California. With many of the campgrounds located directly adjacent to the river, ample fishing, rafting and simply enjoying the river is available to campers. The Kern river is generally divided into two different sections: Upper Kern and Lower Kern.

Headquarters Campground is located along the Kern River in the Sequoia National Forest, 4 miles upstream from Kernville. The campground is 7 miles from Lake Isabella. Visitors to the campground enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting in the Kern River. Swimming in the river is very dangerous because of strong currents.
